Mildred Meyer Horne

KAYSVILLE--After 92 years, Mildred Meyer Horne completed her mortal journey, December 19, 1996.

She was born April 3, 1904, in Richfield, UT to Christian and Francis Colby Meyer. On Oct. 27, 1927, she married her neighbor and childhood sweetheart, Owen W. Horne, in the Manti Temple. They enjoyed 60 years together prior to his death in 1987. Seven children joined their family and shared their wonderful love.

A woman of many talents and skills, she excelled at giving. Her hands were always busy quilting, crocheting, sewing or cooking for someone else. She was a friend to all and shared what she had with anyone in need. As a teacher, she was able to touch the lives of many children, in schools, church and in her own family. She loved her family and always looked forward to sharing her joy in their accomplishments, no matter how modest. Her family and the gospel of Jesus Christ were the mainstays in her life. Of her many callings in the LDS Church, she especially enjoyed the time spent as an ordinance worker at the Ogden Temple.

Perhaps her greatest legacy is the love that she communicated to all around her. She was an example of constant love given regardless of actions or choices. Her family love her dearly and will always remember the individual ways that she touched their lives.

Surviving are her children: Thad (Barbara) of Syracuse, Marvin (Jeannine) of Kaysville; David (Claudia) of North Ridge, CA; Carolyn (Rick) Myhre of Roseville, CA; and Kenneth (Charlene) of Kaysville. Richard (Bernice) and Harold (Luana), her two eldest sons, are deceased. She also leaves 37 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Thelma Beutler of Richfield, Utah.

The family would especially like to thank Ken and Charlene, and their family for their loving care of Grandma who always said, "They are so good to me."

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, at the Kaysville LDS tabernacle, 198 West Center Street. Friends and family may call at Lindquist's Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main, Thursday from 6-8 p.m. and from 9:45-10:45 a.m. on Friday at the church prior to services. Interment in the Kaysville City Cemetery.

She has Ancestral File Number 20PR-9X. Parents: Christian MEYER and Frances Rosina COLBY.

Obituary- Merlin Horne Workman

Obituary: Merlin Horne Workman
Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Jan 16, 2005

Merlin Horne Workman 30 December 1923 "Cruising Again" On January 13th, 2005 our delightful father, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, was finally taken from this mortal existence to reunite once again with his eternal companion of 55 years, Doris Rae Koger Workman, after waiting somewhat patiently for almost two years in the capable and caring hands of Heritage Care in American Fork.

The reunion with his parents, Meltiar Hatch and Edna Horne Workman; along with his brother, Grant; and his sister, Ruth; and a granddaughter, Melissa, must have been sweet indeed. His surviving younger brother, Dale; and sisters, Beth, Gloria, and Eilene, along with their spouses, have been so supportive and were always loved deeply. Honored to be their children are Mark (Connie), Paul (Bonnie), Rae Ann (Glen) and Myron (Christy). Sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews added so much joy to their lives. Merlin was always proud to share with others the accomplishments of his children and their families. Merlin was born and raised in Delta, Utah. A Delta High grad, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp and spent the year of 1944 in the Southwestern Pacific as a bombardier on B-24 Liberators with the Jolly Rogers ("The Best Damn Heavy Bomber Unit in the World"), as part of the 5th Air Force in the 319th Squadron where they never for a minute forgot Pearl Harbor. A highlight of his life was a reunion after 52 years with the bomber crew where the nine surviving crew members celebrated their respect and admiration for each other. Throughout his life, he enjoyed visiting Air Force museums and airports. Few older men escaped Merlin's firm grasp and broad smile before being asked about their military service. Upon his discharge, Merlin fulfilled an LDS Church mission to South Africa with a three-month stopover in Houston, Texas, where he met Doris Rae. The married years were spent in Texas, Colorado and finally back to Utah. Merlin loved LDS Church history and his pioneer ancestry. His visit to Nauvoo and Iowa in the spring of 2000 with Glen and the Workman Boys enabled him to share that love of the faith and sacrifice of the Workman, Hatch, Turner, Hales, Ellis, Horne, Morrison, and Hansen pioneer families. Family and friends remember sharing numerous trips to the National Parks where they loved sitting around a campfire visiting and sleeping in the cold mountain air. One of Merlin's few complaints of 'old age' was losing the freedom to grab Doris Rae and the car keys and go cruising. Quite simply, Merlin drove as they picnic'd thru life. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2005 at Anderson Mortuary, 49 E. 100 North, American Fork. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 17th at the Highland 7th Ward 5212 W. Country Club Drive where friends may call from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Burial is Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Avenue and N Street.

His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1995 Fourth St.

He was born on March 30, 1910, at the mouth of Pine Creek in Baker County. He was the sixth of nine children born to Lewis Calvin and Laura Ellen Phillips Morin.

As a young child, he moved to Hereford, where the family homesteaded a cattle ranch. He attended school in Haines. He was a 1933 graduate of Oregon State University at Corvallis where he earned a bachelor's degree in forestry.

He had a winning smile, a good sense of humor, was affectionate and non-judgmental, and was everyone's favorite uncle in the family, they said.

In younger years, he loved to dance, and while in New Meadows, Idaho, he started the community's first Boy Scout troop.

He is the son of William Roy Horne and Phyllis Halladay, a descendant of courageous Mormon Pioneers who were among the first to make the hazardous trek from Kirtland, Ohio and Nauvoo, Illinois to settle the great Salt Lake Valley in Utah.He lived in Salt Lake City, Logan, Ogden, Tremonton, Brigham City Garland, Peterson and other Utah communities. He was a star football and basketball player at Granite and Bear River High Schools. He attended the University of Utah and L.D.S. Business College where he met Maurine Derrick, who later became his wife and eternal sweetheart.

Seth was employed by the Federal Government in Washington, D.C. during the depression years beginning in 1931.

On October 4, 1933 Seth and Maurine were married in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. They made their home in the Washington, D.C. area where they lived until 1953. He worked for the Labor Department, Executive Offices of the President and Department of Treasury and Office of Public Housing.

He attended the University of Utah where he obtained a degree in business in 1940. His first real estate venture was the purchase of a piece of land in Alexandria, Virginia (which was eventually sold to Marriott).

During the early years, as a real estate developer, he obtained the first apartment zoning in Fairfax County, Virginia where he built a large complex of apartments, shopping center and offices. After acquiring the James Stewart Company, a major national construction company, Seth and Maurine moved their family from Arlington, Virginia to Phoenix, Arizona.

He engaged in heavy commercial construction in addition to his real estate development activities. Major developments included commercial warehouses, the Dallas Furniture Mart, large government projects, hotels, single family housing and office building and shopping centers and nursing homes.

While vigorously pursuing his various business ventures, Seth continually applied his philosophy that there should be a balance between work, play, family and Church service. Seth was an avid golfer and played regularly all through his life.

As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Seth served as a teacher, missionary, Sunday School superintendent, High Council member and bishop. He has said the teachings of Jesus Christ have all the basic elements for success in every aspect of life including business. He has always been a great example of integrity and honesty which eventually earned him lasting respect and trust from all business associates.

Seth is survived by his wife Maurine Derrick Horne, and five children, Roger Marion, Phyllis Helen Gabler, William Douglas, Gregory Greenwood, and Nevi Bonnina Maurine Brooke; thirty three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. One child, Richard Seth who was a twin to Roger died in infancy.

Obituary for Maurine Derrick Horne

From Deseret News archives:
Obituary: Maurine Derrick Horne
Published: Monday, May 1, 2006 4:43 p.m. MDT

Maurine Derrick Horne 1911 ~ 2006 Maurine Derrick Horne, age 95, passed away peacefully at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 26, 2006 at 12:12 p.m. Our beloved mother, grandma, and great-grandmother, Maurine, was born on January 24, 1911 in a typical old Utah house with a front corner porch in American Fork, Utah. She was the daughter of Thales Matthew Derrick and Alice Helen Greenwood, descendants of Mormon pioneers. Since childhood Maurine had a flair for music, art, and drama. As a child she staged original plays with her friends, using elaborate costumes (including very special hair bows for the girls), sets, and props. She lived in many Utah communities, including Thistle, Utah where she dwelt in a railroad car while her father worked at the railroad roundhouse. Her love of trains was one of many interesting threads in the fabric of her long life. Maurine was educated in Salt Lake City schools, including Irving Jr. High (now demolished) before she graduated from East High School. She then studied at, and graduated from, the LDS Business College where she met her husband, Marion Seth Horne, of Richfield, Utah, who preceded her at age 87 in death in August 1997. Her first jobs in Salt Lake City were with the Glen Denning Agency and Utah Power and Light Co. On October 4, 1933 Maurine married Marion Seth Horne in the Salt Lake Temple. The couple soon moved to Washington, DC where Maurine worked for the NRA and the WPA. She was the bosses favorite from the secretarial pool. After the births of her first of six children, twins Roger and Richard, Maurine left the career world to embark on a life devoted to her husband, children and church. Sadly, Richard died after six weeks from pneumonia and flu in January of the very year during which penicillin was later discovered. Maurine has been an example of genuine caring and graciousness to all within the far reaches of her influence, and for many decades has treated everyone, small or mighty, with love and dignity. Maurine helped Seth launch his career as a serial-entrepreneur by meticulously saving pennies and dollars and taking bag lunches to the office, and counting traffic along prospective business sites in Alexandria, Virginia. As a teenager, Maurine taught Sunday school and later presided for many years over the children's primary organization and subsequently served as choir president for many more years. Maurine and Seth were also very active in the Phoenix Corporate Ministry Interfaith group for many years. Her youthful talents in music, art, and drama proved to be a great benefit to her children as she provided them lessons in piano, organ, art, and dance. She also had them involved in competitive swimming. Maurine and Seth moved to Phoenix in 1953. Maurine is survived by five of her six children: Roger (Carol), Helen Gabler (Frank, deceased), Douglas Margie), Gregory (Debbie), and Nevi Brooke (John); 33 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren (two deceased); numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Country Club Ward, 1316 E. Cheery Lynn Road (between Thomas and Osborn), Phoenix. Friends may call at a viewing at the church prior to the funeral services from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friends may also call at a viewing at the Cheery Lynn Church on Sunday evening, April 30, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A brief gathering for gravesite dedication and burial will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, May 3 at the Salt Lake City (Utah) Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to 144 E. Country Club Drive, Phoenix, Arizona 85014. The family suggests a charitable donation to The Humane Society in lieu of flowers.
