Obituary: Maurine Derrick Horne

Maurine Derrick Horne 1911 ~ 2006 Maurine Derrick Horne, age 95, passed away peacefully at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 26, 2006 at 12:12 p.m. Our beloved mother, grandma, and great-grandmother, Maurine, was born on January 24, 1911 in a typical old Utah house with a front corner porch in American Fork, Utah. She was the daughter of Thales Matthew Derrick and Alice Helen Greenwood, descendants of Mormon pioneers. Since childhood Maurine had a flair for music, art, and drama. As a child she staged original plays with her friends, using elaborate costumes (including very special hair bows for the girls), sets, and props. She lived in many Utah communities, including Thistle, Utah where she dwelt in a railroad car while her father worked at the railroad roundhouse. Her love of trains was one of many interesting threads in the fabric of her long life. Maurine was educated in Salt Lake City schools, including Irving Jr. High (now demolished) before she graduated from East High School. She then studied at, and graduated from, the LDS Business College where she met her husband, Marion Seth Horne, of Richfield, Utah, who preceded her at age 87 in death in August 1997. Her first jobs in Salt Lake City were with the Glen Denning Agency and Utah Power and Light Co. On October 4, 1933 Maurine married Marion Seth Horne in the Salt Lake Temple. The couple soon moved to Washington, DC where Maurine worked for the NRA and the WPA. She was the bosses favorite from the secretarial pool. After the births of her first of six children, twins Roger and Richard, Maurine left the career world to embark on a life devoted to her husband, children and church. Sadly, Richard died after six weeks from pneumonia and flu in January of the very year during which penicillin was later discovered. Maurine has been an example of genuine caring and graciousness to all within the far reaches of her influence, and for many decades has treated everyone, small or mighty, with love and dignity. Maurine helped Seth launch his career as a serial-entrepreneur by meticulously saving pennies and dollars and taking bag lunches to the office, and counting traffic along prospective business sites in Alexandria, Virginia. As a teenager, Maurine taught Sunday school and later presided for many years over the children's primary organization and subsequently served as choir president for many more years. Maurine and Seth were also very active in the Phoenix Corporate Ministry Interfaith group for many years. Her youthful talents in music, art, and drama proved to be a great benefit to her children as she provided them lessons in piano, organ, art, and dance. She also had them involved in competitive swimming. Maurine and Seth moved to Phoenix in 1953. Maurine is survived by five of her six children: Roger (Carol), Helen Gabler (Frank, deceased), Douglas Margie), Gregory (Debbie), and Nevi Brooke (John); 33 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren (two deceased); numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Country Club Ward, 1316 E. Cheery Lynn Road (between Thomas and Osborn), Phoenix. Friends may call at a viewing at the church prior to the funeral services from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friends may also call at a viewing at the Cheery Lynn Church on Sunday evening, April 30, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A brief gathering for gravesite dedication and burial will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, May 3 at the Salt Lake City (Utah) Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to 144 E. Country Club Drive, Phoenix, Arizona 85014. The family suggests a charitable donation to The Humane Society in lieu of flowers.

Don C. Kienke, 66, born to Asa S. and Mary Margaret Horne, died November 10, 1993, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Raised in Salt Lake City, moved to Southern California in 1966.This man loved his family and they will miss him dearly until their reunion. He loved flying, his gardens and was a salesman supreme.

Survived by his wife, Marilyn; his sons, Randy (Ann Marie), Larry; his daughters, Karen Nelson (Jeff), Jamie Hutchins (Bryan), eight grandchildren; two brothers, Albert and Byron.

Friends are asked to join the family for graveside services at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, Saturday, November 13th, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Community Nursing Services & Hospice, 2970 So. Main #300, SLC, 84115.

Byron Horne Kienke, age 89, died on Wednesday morning, October 5,1994 at his home.
Byron was born April 16, 1905 in Salt Lake City, Utah of parents Asa S. and Margaret Horne Kienke. He married Olea L. McNeill on April 16, 1935 in the Salt Lake Temple.He had a successful career with the Federal Housing Administration. A High Priest in the LDS Church, he served in many positions, most recently as a temple worker. He loved his family and devoted much of his time assisting with Olea's musical career.

Surviving family members include his daughters, Charleen, (Norman); and Kathryn, (Ted); seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Al. Preceding him in death were his wife, Olea, three great-grandsons, a brother, Don, and a sister Lucille.

He and his family would like to express gratitude for the kindness shown to him by his special friend, Randa, and the caretakers who were so kind to him.

The funeral will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, October 8th, at the Monument Park 1st Ward, 1005 South 2000 East, where friends may call one hour prior to service. Interment, Elysian Burial Gardens under direction of Larkin Mortuary.
