Marion Seth Horne passed away on August 31, 1997 from cancer. Family members were able to be with him during the final hours of his fully-lived 87 1/2 years.

Seth was born on January 8, 1910 in a log cabin built by his father and grandfather in Richfield, Utah. He is the son of William Roy Horne and Phyllis Halladay, a descendant of courageous Mormon Pioneers who were among the first to make the hazardous trek from Kirtland, Ohio and Nauvoo, Illinois to settle the great Salt Lake Valley in Utah.He lived in Salt Lake City, Logan, Ogden, Tremonton, Brigham City Garland, Peterson and other Utah communities. He was a star football and basketball player at Granite and Bear River High Schools. He attended the University of Utah and L.D.S. Business College where he met Maurine Derrick, who later became his wife and eternal sweetheart.

Seth was employed by the Federal Government in Washington, D.C. during the depression years beginning in 1931.

On October 4, 1933 Seth and Maurine were married in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. They made their home in the Washington, D.C. area where they lived until 1953. He worked for the Labor Department, Executive Offices of the President and Department of Treasury and Office of Public Housing.

He attended the University of Utah where he obtained a degree in business in 1940. His first real estate venture was the purchase of a piece of land in Alexandria, Virginia (which was eventually sold to Marriott).

During the early years, as a real estate developer, he obtained the first apartment zoning in Fairfax County, Virginia where he built a large complex of apartments, shopping center and offices. After acquiring the James Stewart Company, a major national construction company, Seth and Maurine moved their family from Arlington, Virginia to Phoenix, Arizona.

He engaged in heavy commercial construction in addition to his real estate development activities. Major developments included commercial warehouses, the Dallas Furniture Mart, large government projects, hotels, single family housing and office building and shopping centers and nursing homes.

While vigorously pursuing his various business ventures, Seth continually applied his philosophy that there should be a balance between work, play, family and Church service. Seth was an avid golfer and played regularly all through his life.

As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Seth served as a teacher, missionary, Sunday School superintendent, High Council member and bishop. He has said the teachings of Jesus Christ have all the basic elements for success in every aspect of life including business. He has always been a great example of integrity and honesty which eventually earned him lasting respect and trust from all business associates.

Seth is survived by his wife Maurine Derrick Horne, and five children, Roger Marion, Phyllis Helen Gabler, William Douglas, Gregory Greenwood, and Nevi Bonnina Maurine Brooke; thirty three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. One child, Richard Seth who was a twin to Roger died in infancy.

Funeral services were held in Phoenix Arizona on Wednesday, September 3, 1997. Visitation in Utah will be held Friday September 5, 1997 from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple.
